In August 2024, a terrorism plot assisted by the Islamic State, a jihadist militant group, targeting a concert of the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna, the capital city of Austria, was uncovered and neutralised. Three males, aged 17, 18 and 19, were arrested for involvement in the plot that was intended to mass murder concert attendees as well as onlookers in the stadium vicinity. According to the CIA which warned the Austrian authorities, 10.000 people should have been killed. EICTP experts Dr. Florian Hartleb and Dr. Nicolas Stockhammer, have analyze the case in depth according to current trends such as the young age of the potential actors and other developments in the field of terrorism in Europe. They come to the conclusion that islamic terrorism is rising as a threat for the security according to new characteristics and radicalisation processes in the virtual world. It is argued that political islam is trying to destabilise as we can observe also in other countries such as Germany.
